Scotts 1642 H Drive Belt Replacement

November 14, 2020Eclectic Homes Standard

The Scotts version 1642 H is just one of many models of riding lawn mowers fabricated using the Scotts brand name from 1992 through 2002. It is equipped with a drive belt, and also referred to as a ground drive belt, which transfers power from the motor to the transmission and propels the machine forwards. This belt is located underneath the tractor, so you’ll need to remove the mower deck until you can replace the drive belt. When the mower deck is away, park your mower to a flat surface to replace the belt.

Place the lawn mower lift jack before the mower. Drive the mower on the jack to ensure each front wheel rests in a wheel basket onto the jack. Switch off the engine and remove the key.

Place one block behind each rear tire to hold the mower in position while working on it. Jack up the mower high enough which you can access the belt.

Remove the steering shaft tie rod located towards the front of the tractor near the motor pulley. At one end it may have a cotter pin. In that case, pull out the pin, then turn the rod about one-quarter lift and turn it from the steering shaft bracket (a flat piece of steel having a bar-like structure welded to it at a ideal angle). Rotate the steering shaft bracket so it is not above the belt.

Unscrew the nut to the parking brake latch handle. It sticks via a slot at the tractor frame. To identify the parking brake latch handle, have a helper set the parking brake while you watch which rod moves. Disengage the parking brake, unscrew the nut, and pull on the little parking brake latch handle from the hardened frame.

Remove the belt guard, located near the motor pulley, which can be directly under the motor, by taking out the two bolts holding it in position and pulling off the guard.

Unhook the massive idler tensioning spring from the frame, near the motor pulley, and from the idler pulley near the middle of the tractor. This releases the tension on the belt, making it slack.

Remove the nut to the idler pulley located near the back axle, and slide off the pulley its beam. This pulley is nearly flush with the frame and must be removed to get the belt off.

Remove the belt from across the fan pulley, near the back axle, and from each one the other pulleys.

Install the new belt by initial looping it over the fan pulley, then reinstalling the idler pulley you removed. Ensure the belt is totally about the idler pulley using the V-side of the belt facing toward the pulley.

Loop the buckle on the other pulleys at the exact same pattern which the belt had been on before you took it away, and reinstall the other components in reverse order of which you took them away.
