Houzz Tour: Sleek San Francisco Bachelor Pad

When designer Nicole Hollis started working on an apartment to get a San Francisco investment banker, she knew that it was not going to be any older bachelor pad. The customer was born in Japan and both of his parents are European. Having grown up around very minimalistic homes, he wanted a house that was contemporary, elegant, and clearly European.

Hollis gave the house a clean and modern look fitting its luxury Pacific Heights place. Inspired in part by the work of designers John Pawson and Piet Boon, it’s bold and luxurious — very contemporary, but with natural, warm colors.

The 8-foot extended fireplace in the great room was a bit of a struggle for Hollis. Both she and the customer wanted it to have a clean cut, with no glass. In the long run , they had the bit custom made with detectors that turn the fire off if a person gets too close.

The setup was catchy as well — since the fireplace was created in one piece, it had to be craned in throughout the building’s roof.

A mixture of clean, contemporary merchandise and bits with more patina creates a look that’s minimalistic but still warm. “The customer allowed me a great deal of freedom to create an interior that I believed was right for the present architecture and his way of life,” says Hollis.

Antique Indonesian rain drums twice as side tables in the living area. Hollis stuck using a bold black and white palette for the house, accenting with browns and grays to provide warmth and depth.

Hollis utilized a Minotti sofa in this area, and topped it with wool and cashmere pillows from Ivano Redaelli.

“I really like light,” says Hollis. “I think of it as the jewellery of the house.” In the dining area, Hollis utilized two bold light fixtures made by Piet Boon. Hollis made the dining table, bench and wing seats herself. Living room is part of the fantastic room, therefore Hollis made a decision to utilize a mirror so that individuals sitting on the bench could still see the amazing fireplace.

This black-and-leather-outfitted media space is the ultimate man cave. A black Flexform sofa faces the custom built-ins and wellness TV. A classic zebra-hide rug adds feel when remaining in the colour palette.

A leather armchair out of B&B Italia sits at close an Asian-inspired sculpture. The floor throughout the house is a crispy European White Oak at a natural finish.

Hollis designed the house so the family room will open up to the kitchen, which makes it well suited for entertaining. Motorized Lutron solar colors roll down over the windows on those rare, sunny San Francisco days.

For those walls, Hollis chosen to get a custom white matte paint by Donald Kaufman. The sofa in the family area is out of Casa Milano, and the glossy lounge chairs are from B&B Italia.

The compact white and stainless steel kitchen is really a minimalist work of art. Wall-mounted stainless steel appliances out of Gaggenau are installed into the white matte lacquer cabinetry in Boffi. The side-by-side fridge and freezer are from Gaggenau, and are situated behind a white panel on the left wall.

Hollis put into a bold black steel beaded chandelier within the stainless steel kitchen island. This customized piece was fabricated by 2 artisans in South Africa. “I put the chandelier in the kitchen since I wished to split up the all-white kitchen using something over-scaled and whimsical,” she says.

To get a kitchen space near the dining space, Hollis installed a bar, sink, under-counter refrigerators, and a wine refrigerator for easy entertaining.

Hollis made the mattress, made from White European Oak having a headboard headboard. A soft cowhide in the foot, adds a fantastic sense of feel to the otherwise blank space.

Although the customer had a very specific vision, he let Hollis take the reigns. “The best thing about this project was that the customer trusted me enough to style everything from the inside architecture to the towels,” she says.
