The way to Take Measurements for Reupholstering an Ottoman
Reupholstering an ottoman is a quick and simple way to provide a well-used piece of furniture a fresh lease on life, and doing this yourself is an excellent way to save money. Many ottomans arrive in simple shapes, which will help to make measuring for new material a cinch. Take some time when quantifying, and don’t neglect to include seam and hem allowances to ensure you have enough fabric to utilize.
Square or Rectangular Ottomans
Measure the top of the ottoman from side to side. Insert 1 inch for seam allowances to get the width of material you require for the top. Most cloths come in standard widths, so if you have to take fabric to consideration for a pillow top ottoman, you may add that material to the length.
Assess the top from front to rear. Insert 1 inch for seam allowances to get the amount of fabric you’ll need. If your ottoman includes a top cushion, then multiply this number by 3 so you are going to have enough fabric for the top and bottom of the cushion in addition to the top of the ottoman.
Measure from the top of the ottoman down to the ground or where you want the new upholstery material to end. Insert 1 inch. Insert another inch if you’ll be covering the pillow shirt separately from the ottoman itself.
Double the width and length of the top dimensions to get the amount of fabric you’ll have to pay for the sides. For instance, if your ottoman is 28 inches wide, 20 inches deep from front to rear and 14 inches high, you’ll require fabric that’s 58 inches wide and 15 inches long to cover the long sides of the ottoman and 42 inches wide by 15 inches long to cover both of these short sides.
Round or Oval Ottomans
Measure across the top of the ottoman from side to side. Insert 1 inch for seam allowances to get the width of material you require for the top.
Measure from front to back across the top. Add 1 inch to get the amount of fabric you require for the top. Multiply this number by 3 if you are covering the pillow top of the ottoman individually from the primary body.
Measure around the circumference of this ottoman. Add 1 inch to have the width of material you need to pay for the sides.
Measure from the top of the ottoman down to the ground, or however long you would like the new upholstery to be. Add 1 inch to get the entire amount of fabric required to cover the sides of this ottoman. Insert another inch for the seam allowances on the pillow shirt if you are covering it individually.
